Blocked Websites
by Andrew Z.

Have you noticed that sometimes you cannot go on websites because the NYCDOE thinks they are “inappropriate?” Some of the most well known websites that are blocked are Youtube and Facebook. However, websites like Twitter and Flickr are not blocked. What is the guideline for these blocked websites? Should students be able to alert teachers of websites that aren’t blocked but should be? Lets see what the PS6 community thinks. As seen on the NYCDOE website

“Filtering In accordance to Children’s Internet Protection Act (“CIPA”), the Department blocks or filters content over the Internet that the Department considers inappropriate for minors. This includes pornography, obscene material, and other material that may be harmful to minors.  The Department may also block or filter other content deemed to be inappropriate, lacking educational or work-related content or that pose a threat to the network.  The Department may, in its discretion, disable such filtering for certain users for bona-fide research or other lawful educational or business purposes.

Users shall not use any website, application, or methods to bypass filtering of the network or perform any other unlawful activities.”

Ms. Bader thinks that some websites should be blocked. When asked about Youtube she said that that is a tricky one. Youtube has good stuff that she wished she had access to but it also has some videos that should not be seen in school. She also said that Facebook is another tough one. It can be used for educational purposes but sometimes it goes outside the school lines.

Jack Z said that websites should be blocked. Things inappropriate for school should be blocked but if there’s education and inappropriate things on the same website it should remain unblocked. Jack also thinks that most social media sites should be blocked but Youtube should not be. Right now YouTube’s winning the fight to be unblocked one-zero.

Peter F says that websites should be blocked under certain circumstances. If they are racist, sexist or contain other inappropriate things then they should be blocked. Peter also says that Social Media should be banned because anyone can post and it could be offensive or worse for students. Peter also says that Youtube should be blocked. It can’t be controlled just like all social media sites. Right now going into the third intermission the score is tied at one.

I think that websites should be blocked but sometimes things do go a little too far. A website with music is blocked but another website that offers the same thing is not. Same thing with Twitter and Facebook. They either should both be blocked or neither be blocked.  And finally in the third intermission I chose Youtube. Youtube wins two-one. Thanks for reading.
