Track Team: The One and Only

Track Team.
It was a program that once played a part in PS6, but now doesn’t. Why?
Track team was a program in which 4th and 5th graders competed against other schools by trying out to be on the team. Last year, more than 120 kids tried out for Track Team, but only 70 kids got accepted. Mr. B decided who would get in based on certain criteria, such as their score on the Pacer Test, which is a state test that kids take, by their ability to run quickly and for long periods of time, and by a trial that kids take for running half a mile. If you met all these standards, you would be likely to make the Track Team. However, not everyone had as much agility as others, so just about 55% of the kids who tried out for the Track Team got accepted. Originally, Mr. B got the idea of Track Team from the previous P.E coach, Ms. Galindo. Track Team was a very populaur sport. You might be thinking, “If so many kids tried out for Track Team, why did it close?”
When the Track Team was canceled, many people had mixed opinions. Some kids, such as Anya L. and Olivia S. were confused and disappointed about Track Team closing, but some other kids, such as Abigail Z and Ariel B, didn’t think that this was an important issue. Anya and Olivia said that it wasn’t fair to the kids who were accepted to the Track Team last year. They had really enjoyed their time on the team and were looking forward to participating in it again. On the other hand, Abigail and Ariel said that the cancelation of the Track Team didn’t concern them. They thought that this didn’t affect them since they had Ultimate team as another option. Another opinion was from a PS6 parent named Joy, who said that in an era of high obesity, no sport should be canceled. She thinks that if kids are inactive outside of school, they should get as much exercise as possible during school hours. Some other parents argue that this is a good decision because while not everyone gets to participate in Track Team, most of the kids who try out for Ultimate get accepted. However, there was one thing that everyone, no matter what his or her opinion, wanted answered- why did the Track Team get cancelled?
According to Mr. B., most kids in the grade liked Ultimate better than Track Team, and so if Mr. B wanted to have enough room and time to have Ultimate practice, he would have to eliminate one of the teams. As Track Team wasn’t as favored as much as Ultimate, the only logical decision was to cancel the Track Team. He wanted more children to have an opportunity to play a sport, and in order to accomplish that he took out Track Team.
Mr. B said that Track Team ended for a reason- to give everyone an opportunity to play more sports and to let more people into Ultimate. Do you think this was a good decision? Only time will tell.
