There Should Be Track
by Rachael R., Laura Y., and Rachel M.
We all have been looking forward to try out for track team ever since we came to P.S.6. Now, when we can finally try out, track is no longer being coached. We are all disappointed about this and we want to know why it stopped. Also, we want to know if others feel the same or different.
We asked other fourth graders about how they felt about no track team. Olivia from class 4-327 says, “I am upset about no track team.” Like us, she wanted to try out. Also, Paley from class 4-328 has wanted to try out for track since Kindergarten. “It’s not fair. The year I finally get to try out, track team is canceled!” Wills also wanted to try out so he said to us “Since last year when I heard about track I really wanted to join track team.”
We wanted to know why track has been canceled so we asked Mr.B (P.S.6’s P.E. teacher) why track team has been canceled. “We canceled track team so that there was more room for Ultimate teams.” With that answer we asked Ms. Bader (the school’s librarian), who used to be a coach for track, the same question. “ The school leaders said that it is not fair for the 4th and 5th graders to have to go through getting cut and chosen for a team.” Plus she also said that there are many different reasons for canceling track. Now we know we will get more than one answer. Mr. Reed told us track team was canceled because parents were upset that their children tried out and didn’t get accepted. Because of this they canceled track team.
Since we want to be on track team we would like to know about it so we asked Mr. Reed about it. He said that that the kids were split into groups such as sprinters or long distance runners. He also said “The kids would run around the track. We would also do warm ups before running.” Ms. Bader said, “There was practice once or twice a week. Sometimes they would run in the park or around the block. Mr.B would usually talk about what would happen next week or something the kids would need to know about the team.” This is what they did in track.
We want to have track because we heard from people that it is a lot of fun. Plus, we love to run and wanted to do track. We thought that it would be a great opportunity and we really wanted to join track team. This is why there should be track team. Now we know that other people feel the same way, why it has stopped and a bit about it.
