The Green Team at PS 6
by Isabella A.
In our PS6 community we have a Green Team. This team consists of the Principal, Ms. Godshall, parent representatives, student representatives, teacher representatives, and the head of the custodians. The purpose of our Green Team is to identify issues with conserving energy, or any such idea. You have time to prepare any writings or topics you would like to share with the other people in this group. At the start of the year we set up goals that we wanted to accomplish by the end of the year. Some ideas we had were Green Star Classrooms, Assemblies, Notices in the Connections Newsletter, turning off the computers on the weekends, water bottles, and fixing the water fountains. All of these ideas have different purposes. The Green Star Classrooms would be for working together to help our community. Assemblies and notices would be for awareness. If we turn off the computers then we would be conserving more energy. Lastly, students are encouraged to use reusable water bottles. These are the goals and ideas that we have made in the Green Team.
To be more specific, the GSC is when kids go into classrooms to check their trash and recycling bins. We are looking for classes with bins that are close to each other, neat and organized, and have the correct contents. The classes with all of these components will receive a green star. As soon as the class accumulates a certain number of green stars, the whole class including teachers will get a prize or a gift. The Green Star Lunchroom will be similar to this except it may be as a grade. This will help us work together, and stay green at the same time. This is a simple and fun way to keep our PS6 community Eco-friendly.
Assemblies and notices would be things that we do to get your attention. These things are so you know what we are doing. You can give in writings or notices that you think would help even if you are not in the Green Team. You can join the Green Team if you want and you are encouraged to do this. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month from 7:30 to 8:00. Other ways that we could bring attention to the Green Team and its purpose are by making posters, writing in the Student Eye, and any other ideas that you can think of. Anything that you would like to do should be told to Ms. Godshall first. Those are ways to get you and other kids involved and understanding.
Lastly, we have conserving energy and plastic trash. One of the student representatives found out that the computers were not turned off over the weekends. This is a waste of energy that should not happen. On questioning Mr. Silverstein, he said that it was because they were slow to turn back on again. I have noticed that many students bring in plastic water bottles, which are thrown away after being used. It is my opinion that this is a big waste. I bring in a plastic water bottle, but I try to reuse it before I throw it away. If some kids prefer not to do this then they should bring in a reusable bottle and refill it. I think that if some kids do not like to do either of these then they should collect their plastic bottles and bring them back to the store. At the store they know what to do in order to get them recycled.
All of these things weave together and go back to the Green Team and our goals. Each of these plans will help us improve our Eco-friendly PS6 community. Please try to contribute to helping the Green Team. After reading this I hope you are more open to what the Green Team is and what we do.
