The Secrets of the Copycats
by Gabrielle G.
We have always taken our math worksheets and forms from our mailboxes, completed them at home, and never even once given a thought to how, where, why, and even who copied them. So who are these people who are willing to copy all these papers for the whole school?
No one but the one and only- the Copycats.
The Copycats are a group of student’s mom’s at PS6 who volunteer to copy worksheets and papers for the whole school. Each mom has a specific day and hour to work and copy papers. I interviewed some Copycat members and asked them a few questions. Here are the questions and answers-
1. Who copied all the papers before there was a group of copycats?
Until the fall of 2008, the classroom teachers and/or assistant teachers used to copy papers before there was a group of copycats.
2. Why did people think that this system needed to change?
Assistant teachers were spending valuable time copying papers in the copy room instead of teaching their students in a classroom.
3. How long has this new system existed?
This program has existed about 5 or 6 years.
4. Who gave your group the name of the “copycats”?
Michelle Doty, then Corresponding Secretary of PTA executive board has given the Copycats their name.
5. What do you do in the Copy Room?
The Copycats copy homework, class assignments, and school announcements. Basically every form that teachers or administration distribute is copied by the Copycats.
6. Who is allowed to be a copycat?
Anyone who is willing to volunteer and sign up for a shift can be a Copycat. It is important to know that being a copycat is an important commitment, like a job.
7. How does the copying process work?
Teachers have to fill in a request form that mimicked functions on machines (1-sided, 2-sided, collated, grouped, or stapled.)
8. How many days and hours a day does each copycat work?
Most of the time, the average person works for one shift, which is three hours long.
9. How many Copycats are there?
Now there are 30 Copycats.
So next time you go to your mailbox and look at the worksheets and papers in there, thank the amazing Copycats who spend so much of their time copying papers for PS6. Thank your parents for all the time they spend copying papers for PS6. Bravo, Copycats!
