Selective Teams: Gone Forever?
by Lily W.
Have you heard that there will no longer be a lot of selective teams? Track and math enrichment have closed down, and Ultimate is no longer selective. Track has closed and it is very hard. I personally am angry with this, and I hope this article will help shape your opinion. All of the people I have talked with agree with me but I will include a short paragraph at the end about the other side of the story.
I have talked with Ms. Bader about this issue. She is the school’s librarian and media teacher. She is also a former track coach. She feels sad about track team ending, but she can see how it is reasonable. She feels that it was a PS6 tradition to have track team selective, and now it is not fair to the track kids that it has ended. She also says that it seems reasonable because she remembers how it felt to not get into selective teams--not good. It can hurt to be told that you are not able to do something. “It seemed to be pushing the community apart instead of bringing it together”- Ms.Bader. She believes that it is excluding some, yet it is still unfair to take it away. She can really see it both ways.
I have also spoken with two brothers, Andrew and Jack Z. Jack doesn’t like what is happening to the track team. He says that he was waiting for this opportunity and now he doesn’t have that chance. He was mad. But Jack also feels that it is unfair to the kids that do not get in. Andrew was upset. Last year, he tried out and didn’t make it. He wanted to try again this year and have an opportunity to be on the team. His solution to our track team problem is that everyone could be on the team, but only the best can go to the meets. He believes everyone should have a chance and it hurts to not get in to a team/club, but he thinks that they should not cancel track team altogether. All in all, both brothers feel that closing track team isn’t fair, but Jack can see both ways.
Finally, I interviewed William D, who was on track team and in math enrichment. He was very upset and he thought about how there were many kids who needed math and athletic enrichment, and these programs helped them, but William also thinks that people can enrich themselves at home. He really believes that we can help ourselves at home.
I believe that it was really unfair that we closed the track team and math enrichment down. People were shut out and hurt. When I got the news, I felt hurt, but I also realized how it didn’t affect everyone. This made me realize that only a handful of kids were affected out of the whole grade. The track team closing hit a few, but those who it hit were hit hard. They made a petition to stop this from happening. Closing track team was hard for the kids on track. Yet, it can hurt when you are excluded. They can feel like nobody thinks they are any good. Losing math enrichment made kids lose the extra work that they really need. It helps to be taught new things and keep your mind growing. It really was a mistake to
All in all, stopping these teams and clubs have affected many people. It has had a big impact on the community. Do you think closing these teams was the right thing to do? What do you think?
