Music in School
by Jennifer K. and Daniela M.
Ms. Winograd has been teaching at PS6 for 13 years, and that’s since the year 2000! We wanted to know how come the 4th and 5th graders couldn’t have music for the whole school year and some things else, and she freely gave us the answers. Here they are along with the questions:
“How many instruments do you play?”
“I play 9 instruments, but I only play three very well.”
“Why can’t 4th and 5th grade have music for the full year?”
“There’s just so many things teachers teach so you can’t fit music in ALL of the years.”
What problems do you have during music?
“Sometimes people are not as focused as they have to be, and some people just don’t listen to me, and I have to repeat things more than once.
Do you think it’s hard to have both sidewalk singers and music?
“Well yeah, it’s hard but it’s well worth it.
When did you start playing music?
“I’ve always been musical, since age 4. I’m going to be 61, you know. The only time I wasn’t doing music was when I went to New Mexico and lived in a tipi.”
Do you sing with anyone?
“I go with a group called The New Amsterdam Singers.”
How did you become P.S.6’s music teacher?
“I left one school because it wasn’t a good fit. And then PS6 had two teacher spots, one for a music teacher, and another to be a homeroom teacher, so I applied for both.”
We wanted to interview her because we were curious about her and her subject.
So, all in all, we learned many things about Music in School and Ms. Winograd herself. If you have any suggestions for our next article, tell us!
