Dutch Day No More
by Allison E., Noa S. and Lucy C.
Some of us 4th and 5th graders remember Dutch day from 2 or 3 years ago. So why don’t 2nd graders do it anymore? We interviewed Ms.Berg from class 2-225 and we got the entire scoop.
We first asked the reason for Dutch day ending. Ms.Berg told us that it was because of the curriculum. The second grade teachers talked and they realized that kids in 4th grade learn old New York too. So the 2nd grade teachers thought that the kids in 2nd grade should learn about present New York.
Instead of doing Dutch day 2nd graders go on a lot of field trips. One of them is the museum of the city of New York. There they talked about where the different buildings would go. So the factories would not be next to apartment buildings and the parks would be next to the apartments. They also talked about the bridges in New York. They used a grid that looks exactly like the city blocks on the street!
Lastly, they went to the panorama exhibit at the Queens museum. It is a diagram of all of New York. It shows all the buildings and parks in all 5 boroughs. (Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.) It shows how all of the skyscrapers are in Manhattan and how the farmlands are in other boroughs. It’s really cool!
So what would you prefer in 2nd grade Dutch day or present New York?
