Banned Books
by Melanie F.
From September 21 to September 27, books in the library had the sign BANNED on them. When a book is
banned, it is not allowed to be available to anyone anymore. They aren’t banned in our library, but in
other places they are. If you read the reasons why they have been banned, you will find that they are absolutely totally ridiculous. They have been put on display for us to realize how lucky our library is to have the right to read these wonderful books and that some people don’t have the right to read them. Of course, the awesome Ms. Bader would never take away these books. And here are Ms. Bader’s thoughts about banned books...
I asked Ms. Bader her feelings about banned books. She said that some reasons used to ban books can be
ridiculous. People think that they’re doing really good things by banning these books and are protecting n
children by doing this. But what they are forgetting is that libraries are public places where anyone can come
and where all books can be read and enjoyed. Libraries work hard to have all ideas in them.
My second question for Ms. Bader was what was, in your opinion, the most reasonable purpose for a book to
be banned and why? Her answer was that some books have been banned since they are too inappropriate for
elementary school children for violence, or if other book reviewers have agreed that it is really inappropriate.
My third question for Ms. Bader was what is the most unbearable purpose for a book to be banned in your
opinion and why? She said that she felt that banning a book for religious purposes is ridiculous because
libraries are public places where people of all different religious backgrounds can come. Sometimes the author
doesn’t follow that religion or follows no religion, and would have someone not following a religion, which
will cause it to be banned. For example, the book, “The Golden Compass” is banned because the author does not follow a religion. Also, books like, “Captain Underpants” have been banned since some parents think the humor is inappropriate, but the author was thinking of child humor as he wrote this.
The last question I asked Ms. Bader was what well known books have been banned? She said that the
series “Harry Potter” has been banned because of magic and some religions think that magic is a form of the
devil. Also, the book, ”The Giving Tree” has been banned because a man cuts down the tree who is a woman and feminists think that is sexist.
In conclusion, Ms. Bader has showed us that these books are banned in other places and how lucky we are
that we get to read them. So read one of these books and celebrate our freedom to read!_
