A Student Council at PS 6
by Isabella A.
I think that at PS6 we should have a Student Council and representatives. This would help kids to be leaders and to work together. They could share their ideas, views, opinions and thoughts on issues in the school. These student representatives would be voted on by the class and would meet to discuss things that they have noticed. This is why I think we should have a student council.
From the student council they would learn to be good leaders by helping others. They would all listen to each other and collaborate. If two students disagreed they would work it out, collaborate and compromise. Not only would these students be leaders in the school but also in the classroom. These students would help to get their classmates quiet, keep them on task, and be responsible for positive as well as negative behavior.
In addition to this there would be an affect on the kids even who were not chosen. First of all, they would have to make a good responsible choice of who they thought would be a good representative of their class. Secondly, they might also want to push themselves in order to be picked. If a student behaved badly but they wanted to be the representative then they would work harder, behave better, and aspire higher.
Another reason that we should have a student council is so we have the opinion of the student body. Different grades could have different issues or thoughts to share. Within those grades and individual classes. All of the representatives would have to be aware of the thoughts and concerns of their classmates. When discussing the issues, each class would have a fair say on the matter due to the equal amount of representatives and cooperation. The topics discussed might be about anything from fundraisers to the Green Team. Other students could ask the representative to share any of their ideas in the meeting. These are ways that PS6 students could communicate better between each other. It is a good way to share what we think.
You might think that it is unfair to the kids who do not get picked, but actually it is a good lesson for them. They should find out if they are not responsible, respectful, cooperative, or any other quality or trait. It is fair however to the kids who deserve to be picked. Sometimes if there are a few kids who are good they do not get their fair share. For example, it is not fair to have a blanket punishment upon the whole class when a few kids really try. Yes, some kids do deserve consequences for their behavior but there are always some kids who should get their full and fair share.
I have experience with being a class representative because my class chose two. The people who were nominated to be class representative made speeches and addressed them to the class. Based on what we knew about these people and their speeches we voted on two people. I was picked as one of the class representatives. This helps both my classmates and I to listen to directions, do the right thing, and make good choices.
